Rabat – The General Delegation for Prison Administration and Rehabilitation (DGAPR) announced an exceptional offer, allowing inmates to receive food baskets from their families during visits starting from the second day of Eid al Fitr.
The initiatives are part of ongoing efforts to have a morale-boosting impact on inmates, the prison authority said, acknowledging the importance of having inmates maintain ties with their families during special occasions.
“Prison institutions will work to provide all necessary facilities for their inmates to communicate with their families to inform them of the specified date and the required conditions for delivering the food packages,” DGAPR said in its statement.
It also called on families of inmates to “engage seriously and responsibility” to contribute to the effective success of the process.
Morocco is set to sight the crescent moon for Shawwal, the tenth month in the Islamic calendar, early next week to confirm the official date of Eid Al Fitr.
Shawwal marks the end of Ramadan, the month when Muslims fast from dawn to sunset for 29 or 30 days.
Morocco expects to fast 29 days this Ramadan as astronomers expect Eid Al Fitr to be on April 10.
Many countries are expected to celebrate the religious festival on April 10, including Saudi Arabia, Qatar, the UAE, and several other countries in the MENA region.
However, Saudi Arabia and the majority of Gulf countries started fasting on March 11, which means Ramadan will last 30 days. In Morocco, by contrast, this year’s Ramadan is expected to last only 29 days.
