Rabat – In the aftermath of the tragic killing of seven World Central Kitchen aid workers in Gaza by the Israeli Occupation Forces, the food aid group has amplified its demand for an independent investigation into the matter.
The humanitarian organization’s call for a probe comes as the IOF announced the dismissal of two senior officers following a probe citing “serious violation of the commands and IDF Standard Operating Procedures,” CNN reported.
The IOF’s investigation found that its forces “mistakenly” targeted the convoy and claimed they believed the aid workers to be Hamas gunmen. The incident has prompted calls for an independent investigation from the WCK charity, which asserted that the IDF cannot impartially investigate its own actions in Gaza.
“We demand the creation of an independent commission to investigate the killings of our WCK colleagues … The IDF cannot credibly investigate its own failure in Gaza,” WCK said in a statement.
“It is also clear from their preliminary investigation that the IDF has deployed deadly force without regard to its own protocols, chain of command and rules of engagement,” the charity added.
It stressed that the IOF’s own video “fails to show any cause to fire on our personnel convoy, which carried no weapons and posed no threat,” noting that the convoy followed “proper communications procedures” with the Israeli army during its travel.
The Israeli president Isaac Herzog has expressed his “deep sorrow” and “apologized for the tragic death of the WCK team” during a phone call with the group’s founder Jose Andres.
However, the charity’s CEO Erin Gore said that “their apologies for the outrageous killing of our colleagues represent cold comfort … It’s cold comfort for the victims’ families and WCK’s global family.”
