Rabat – Global leaders in plant nutrition and green energy, OCP Group and Fortescue Energy, have announced a groundbreaking joint venture (JV) in Morocco to develop and supply green hydrogen, ammonia, and fertilizers.
This strategic partnership, declared in a press release, marks a significant step towards decarbonization efforts and positions Morocco as a green energy powerhouse. The JV, established as an equal partnership, aims to revolutionize the way we power our planet.
By leveraging renewable resources and cutting-edge technology, the partners plan to produce green hydrogen – a clean-burning fuel with zero carbon emissions – alongside green ammonia and customized fertilizers.
“Our strategic partnership with Fortescue is a testimony to our joint commitment to decarbonisation,” said Mostafa Terrab, Chairman and CEO of OCP Group. “This is a key step towards fulfilling our vision of simultaneously ensuring global food security and combating climate change.”
The initiative goes beyond just supplying clean energy. The JV also encompasses the potential development of manufacturing facilities and a dedicated R&D hub in Morocco.
This hub, strategically located near Mohammed VI Polytechnic University (UM6P) near Marrakech, will focus on advancing research in renewable energy, green hydrogen, and mineral processing.
The collaboration extends beyond traditional partnerships. The venture capital funds of both OCP and Fortescue will work together to drive investment in crucial technological advancements in the green energy sector.

This ensures the JV remains at the forefront of innovation and helps expedite the global transition towards clean energy.
The project aligns perfectly with Morocco’s potential as a green energy leader. The country boasts abundant wind and solar resources, extensive coastlines, and proximity to Europe and the Americas, making it an ideal location for green energy production and distribution.
Andrew Forrest AO, Fortescue Executive Chair and Founder, emphasized the project’s potential to transform Morocco into a global green energy hub.
“Together, Fortescue and OCP will build a world-leading and globally competitive platform to accompany Morocco’s journey into a green energy production, manufacturing, and industrial powerhouse,” he declared.
The JV is poised to create significant economic benefits for Morocco. “This venture has the potential to supply not only a large domestic market for green products but also other countries and continents,” said Mark Hutchinson, Fortescue Energy CEO. “This is a very significant moment…creating thousands of jobs and industries in Morocco.”
The joint venture between OCP Group and Fortescue Energy marks a significant milestone in advancing renewable energy production and sustainable development, with far-reaching implications for Morocco and the global community.
