Rabat – Rachid Talbi Alami, President of the Moroccan parliamentary group the National Rally of Independents (RNI), has been re-elected as the President of the House of Representatives for the remaining period of the current legislature (2021-2026).

The election took place today during a plenary session held to mark the opening of the second session of the 2023-2024 legislative year.

Talbi Alami, the candidate of the parliamentary majority, secured 264 votes out of 324 cast, while his sole opponent, Abdellah Bouanou, President of the parliamentary group of the Justice and Development Party, received 23 votes.

In addition, 37 null ballots were recorded, which were not counted towards either candidate’s total votes

The election process for the President of the House of Representatives for the remainder of the parliamentary term (2021-2026) took place in accordance with the provisions of the Chamber’s internal regulations, according to Moroccan news agency (MAP).

These regulations stipulate that the president is elected at the beginning of the legislature and then again in the third year, during the April session, for the remaining period of said legislature, as per Article 62 of the Constitution.

Talbi Alami is a prominent Moroccan politician. Born in 1958 in Tetouan, he has had a diverse career spanning academia, finance, and politics.

He holds a doctorate in management and finance from the University of New York. He also pursued higher education at Mohammed V University in Rabat.

Alami’s political career began in 1992 when he became a member and later vice-president of the urban commune of Sid El Mandri in Tetouan. He has held various positions in local government, including membership in the urban community of Tetouan and presidency of the finance and budget commission.
