Rabat – Morocco and Belgium took a significant step towards a stronger partnership on Monday in Rabat, signing key agreements on judicial modernization, green energy cooperation, and a roadmap for future collaboration.
The agreements, signed during the 3rd meeting of the Joint High Commission for the Morocco-Belgium Partnership, signal a commitment to addressing critical areas like legal systems and environmental sustainability.
The centerpiece of the agreements is a “Cooperation Roadmap,” outlining a future-oriented strategy for collaboration. The roadmap emphasizes regular political dialogue, joint ministerial meetings, and continued engagement on energy transition, migration, and human rights.
Morocco’s Minister of Justice, Abdellatif Ouahbi, and Belgium’s Deputy Prime Minister, Paul Van Tigchelt, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) specifically focused on modernizing judicial administration.
This agreement aims to foster information exchange on legal developments, provide technical support for justice reforms, and ultimately strengthen judicial management capacities in both countries.
Another key MoU targets green energy collaboration. Signed by Morocco’s Minister of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development, Leila Benali, and Belgium’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Hadja Lahbib, the agreement paves the way for cooperation in areas like green ammonia production.
This includes encouraging joint research and development efforts to support the production and distribution of green hydrogen and ammonia for domestic, regional, and international export.
The signing ceremony followed a successful meeting of the High Joint Commission, co-chaired by Morocco’s Head of Government, Aziz Akhannouch, and Belgium’s Prime Minister, Alexander De Croo.
Notably, the event reaffirmed Belgium’s long standing support for Morocco’s autonomy plan for the Western Sahara region, highlighting it as a “credible and serious effort” towards a peaceful resolution.
This comprehensive package of agreements signifies a new chapter in Morocco-Belgium relations, one focused on addressing contemporary challenges through collaborative efforts in legal reform, environmental stewardship, and strategic partnership.
