Rabat – Minister of Industry Ryad Mezzour said that 62% of Moroccans prever local products over imported ones.

Mezzour made his remarks during a parliamentary  session at the House of Representatives on Monday, suggesting that out of 100 Moroccan consumers, 62 prefer local products over imported ones.

Mezzour attributed the situation to measures by  the Ministry of Trade aimed at strengthening Morocco’s trust in national products.

Mezzour said industrial sectors are crucial in Morocco’s development, particularly in creating jobs and providing opportunities for youth.

Mezzour’s remarks echo the findings of a 2022 study, showing that 60% of Moroccans prefer local products over foreign brands, while the remaining 40% expressed opinions divided between indifference and favoring foreign products.

The study by Moroccan marketing firm Sungeria Groupe and media outlet L’Economiste suggested that Moroccans hold positive views on locally made products as 60% of men and 55% of women prefer to buy and consume them.

In rural areas, Moroccan products enjoy wider popularity estimated at 72% compared to a 14% preference for foreign products.

A positive overview is also maintained in urban areas, where 48% of respondents prefer local brands compared to 26% others who prefer foreign goods.

Mezzour also discussed the strategic changes within Morocco’s industrial sector, adding that strategies were oriented towards international markets.

According to the minister, Morocco’s goal now is to reinforce national sovereignty by developing Moroccan solutions and innovations, both in traditional sectors like textiles and agri-food as well as in new industries.

Mezzour also cited data regarding the upgrade of industrial zones, suggesting that a study covering 116 industrial zones led to the renovation of 900 hectares since 2019.
