Rabat – Finland’s President of the Parliament, Jussi Halla-aho, concluded a visit to Morocco on Monday, solidifying the North African nation’s growing importance for both the European Union (EU) and Finland itself.

In addition to emphasizing Morocco’s role as a key EU partner, Halla-aho’s visit  highlighted the burgeoning bilateral relationship between Helsinki and Rabat

During discussions with high-ranking Moroccan officials, Halla-aho’s praise for Morocco extended beyond mere platitudes. He described the North African nation as a “very important” partner for the EU, particularly in crucial areas like energy transition, climate change mitigation, and regional security.

This focus on shared challenges underscores Finland’s strong support for strengthening ties between the EU and Morocco, highlighting a commitment to a “rules-based international order,” the Finnish official argued.

Looking beyond the EU framework, the visit served as a catalyst for deepening the evolving bilateral relationship between Finland and Morocco. Halla-aho lauded the “excellence” of existing ties, pointing to shared values and ambitions that resonate on the international stage.

In addition, he commended Morocco’s recent domestic reforms, which he said speak volumes about the country’s ambitious development goals.

However, the focus of the Finnish official’s visit wasn’t solely on shared sustainability commitments. Halla-aho actively explored the potential for “deeper cooperation on many fronts, particularly in the economic field.”

He especially highlighted existing agreements in renewable energy and water management as a springboard for further collaboration.

This emphasis aligns perfectly with the 2022 Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on energy cooperation, which aims to facilitate Finnish companies’ access to the Moroccan market and advance renewable energy development in the region.

Finland’s widely recognized expertise in this sector positions the European country as a valuable partner for Morocco, with the North African kingdom itself aspiring to become a regional green energy leader. The economic opportunities, however, are not one-sided.

Morocco’s strategic location serves as a gateway to Africa’s burgeoning markets, making it an attractive destination for Finnish investment in areas like hydropower, wind, and solar energy.

This deepening relationship not only holds significant economic promise but also fosters a rules-based international order and promotes collaborative solutions to pressing global challenges.
