Moroccan Muay Thai star Zakaria El Jamari scored a memorable victory over previously unbeaten Thongpoon PK Saenchai early Saturday morning at ONE Championship’s ONE Fight Night 22 event.
El Jamari went on the offensive from the start of the strawweight Muay Thai bout, entertaining the crowd at the Lumpinee Boxing Stadium in Bangkok, Thailand.
The Moroccan opened the action-packed first round with low kicks to the inside leg as his opponent kept a tight guard and countered with strikes.
Thongpoon responded to El Jamari’s attacks with a big right hand, followed by a left hook and a left elbow, but the Moroccan rocked the Thai fighter with a powerful right hand. The two men traded elbows in the corner as the clock ticked down on the first round.
The second round was just as entertaining. In the biggest moment of the round, the Thai threw a well-timed elbow that opened a cut above El Jamari’s right eye. Bleeding, El Jamari showed grit and fired back with body shots and a powerful left hook that landed on the Thai’s right cheek. Towards the end of the round, Thongpoon forced the Moroccan into the corner and threw a flurry of punches.
In the third and final round, the two men continued to exchange punches. El Jamari scored the highlight of the round with a big left hook that wobbled Thongpoon.
El Jamari did enough to convince all three judges to give him a memorable victory by unanimous decision. He also earned a round of applause from the crowd for his enthusiastic performance.
The 34-year-old Moroccan picked up his first ONE Championship win after losing to Russia’s Ali Saldoev in his ONE Championship debut on March 1 at ONE 166 in Qatar.
