Rabat – Morocco has welcomed the adoption of a resolution supporting the admission of Palestine as a full member of the United Nations.
The Moroccan permanent mission to the UN has approved the resolution by the UN General Assembly, recalling that it was among the first co-sponsors.
“Through this resolution, of which the Kingdom of Morocco was the first co-sponsors, the General Assembly grants to the State of Palestine additional privileges and prerogatives within various organs of the United Nations,” the permanent mission wrote on X, formerly Twitter, earlier this week.
Morocco said the resolution also requests the Security Council to reconsider favorably the admission of Palestine as a member of the UN.
The mission also recalled King Mohammed VI’s instructions and Morocco’s position in support of an independent Palestinian state based on the borders of June 4, 1967, with East Jerusalem as its capital.
Morocco has also emphasized its support for the two-state solution.
On Friday, the General Assembly adopted the resolution, which marked an overwhelming support from the international community,
The resolution secured a majority of 143 votes in favor.
Morocco was among the countries that voted in favor, while 25 others abstained.
Only nine countries voted against the resolution, including Czechia, Hungary, Argentina, Micronesia, Nauru, Palau, Papua New Guinea, Israel, and the US.
The adopted document states that “the State of Palestine is qualified for membership in the United Nations.”
The adoption of the resolution comes as Israeli Occupation Forces (IOF) continue their merciless campaign in Gaza, particularly Rafah.
Since October 7, Israel has killed over 34,971 in Gaza in addition to injuring at least 78,641 others.
Tens of thousands are missing and feared to be dead under the rubble.
In the past 24 hours, Israel has killed over 18 Palestinians in Rafah as the bombardment persisted across the region, Wafa news agency reported today.
