Rabat – Princess Lalla Hasnaa, President of the Mohammed VI Foundation for Environmental Protection, chaired a Board of Directors meeting today in Fez.
In her address, Princess Lalla Hasnaa listed the foundation’s key achievements and initiatives for 2023. She reiterated her ongoing commitment to African youth through the African Youth Climate Hub (AYCH).
This initiative is a focal point of her opening remarks at the first high-level annual meeting of the Partnership for Green Education, organized by UNESCO and the UAE Ministry of Education during COP 28.
Princess Lalla Hasnaa emphasized the necessity of equitable data sharing with the Global South and called for decisive measures to bridge Africa’s digital divide.
As a patron of the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development, she announced several projects launched by the Foundation, including those discussed at the third Institutional Dialogue in Monaco last June.
The new projects complement established programs such as the Clean Beaches initiative, which supports the Lalla Hasnaa Sustainable Coast Awards, and the Sea Without Plastic campaign.
They aim to bolster ocean knowledge among African university students, with training resources developed in partnership with the Hassan II International Environmental Training Center.
A major focus of Princess Lalla Hasnaa’s speech was the foundation’s efforts to decarbonize Morocco’s economy. She detailed training initiatives for companies on carbon footprint measurement and climate finance training for local governments.
A highlight of the meeting was the announcement of the inauguration of the historic Hboula Garden in Meknes. The restoration project, executed with various partners, reflects the Foundation’s commitment to preserving Morocco’s natural heritage.
Princess Lalla Hasnaa concluded by thanking all partners for their unwavering support and commitment to the Foundation’s environmental initiatives, emphasizing their role in fostering a sustainable and balanced future.
During the meeting, the Board of Directors approved the financial statements for 2022 and 2023, with the legal auditor affirming their accuracy and compliance.
Established in 2001 by His Majesty King Mohammed VI, the Mohammed VI Foundation for Environmental Protection, aims to raise environmental awareness among Moroccan citizens.
The Foundation focuses on education and sustainable development, targeting a wide audience, including youth, civil society, businesses, and academic institutions.
The Foundation’s programs, supported by numerous local and international partners, cover five main areas: Education for Sustainable Development, Protection of Coasts and Oceans, Air Quality, Climate, and the Protection and Development of the Marrakech Palm Grove, Sustainable Tourism, and Restoration of Historical Parks and Gardens.
