The conference marks a significant milestone for SSEC, established in 1963, as it hosts its annual gathering in Africa for the first time.
The organization is dedicated to strengthening the teaching of history, geography, and civic and economic education to empower future generations and contribute to a more just global society.
“The social sciences offer a unique lens to understand the challenges facing our world, from inequality to environmental degradation,” said SSEC organizers in a press release.
The statement added that “this conference aims to foster dialogue on how social science education can equip students with the knowledge and tools needed to build a more just and sustainable future, aligning with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).”
Adopted in 2015, the SDGs outline 17 interconnected goals addressing pressing global issues like poverty, hunger, and climate change.
Social science education plays a crucial role in raising awareness about these challenges and empowering future generations to contribute to sustainable solutions.
Beyond its global focus, the conference also seeks to collaborate with a diverse network of university faculty members spanning a wide range of social science disciplines, according to the statement.
