Rabat – Morocco called on Friday for a lasting political resolution to the ongoing crisis in Sudan during a meeting of the African Union’s (AU) Peace and Security Council (PSC).
Speaking at the meeting, Mohamed Arrouchi, Morocco’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the AU and the Economic Commission for Africa (ECA), emphasized that political compromise is the only viable solution to the crisis in Sudan. This solution must be grounded in serious and constructive dialogue, aimed at alleviating the suffering of the Sudanese people and preserving the country’s state institutions, he said.
Since April 2023, heavy fighting between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) has devastated the country, leading to severe humanitarian crises. Key areas like El Fasher in Darfur have seen critical infrastructure, including hospitals, attacked and shut down, exacerbating the crisis for civilians who are already facing significant challenges accessing healthcare.
The conflict has notably led to massive displacement, with nearly 9.4 million people forcibly displaced both within and outside Sudan. Over 7.2 million people are displaced internally, while more than 1.9 million have sought refuge in neighboring countries like Chad, Ethiopia, and Egypt.

Arrouchi expressed Morocco’s hope for an end to the military confrontations in Sudan, advocating for dialogue to restore trust, consolidate peace, and foster reconciliation to address the country’s current challenges.
Highlighting the deep and strong ties between Morocco and Sudan, the Moroccan diplomat stressed that the resolution to the Sudanese crisis should be driven by the Sudanese themselves through constructive dialogue.
The AU meeting was an opportunity for Morocco to reiterate its support for the Jeddah platform and other initiatives aimed at restoring stability across Sudan. Facilitated by Saudi Arabia and the US, the platform is a negotiation framework established to address the conflict in Sudan.
Arrouchi also stressed the need for intensified diplomatic efforts to build confidence, protect the Sudanese people, and effectively respond to the dire humanitarian situation.
Morocco believes there is an urgent need to manage the crisis through Sudanese-led efforts, he said, warning that external interference could worsen the conflict and jeopardize regional peace and security.
The Moroccan delegation at the AU meeting further reaffirmed Morocco’s solidarity with the Sudanese people during these challenging times and its commitment to all regional, continental, and international efforts to find a solution that guarantees Sudan’s territorial and national unity.
