Rabat – Germany has extended a helping hand to Morocco in its post-earthquake reconstruction efforts. Fouzi Lekjaa, Morocco’s Minister Delegate for Economy and Finance, and Sandra Rohleder, Division Chief at the German Development Bank (KfW), signed a loan agreement on Wednesday in Rabat for €100 million.

This critical financial aid will directly support the Reconstruction and Upgrading Program for the Al Haouz region, which was hit by a devastating earthquake.

The loan aims to alleviate the socio-economic burdens placed on the local population and assist in managing the aftermath of the disaster.

“This agreement is crucial for financing direct aid to affected households,” emphasized Lekjaa to Moroccan news outlet MAP, highlighting the importance of the partnership between Morocco and Germany.

He further commended the agreement as a testament to the longstanding collaboration between the two nations, particularly in the context of major reform programs and infrastructure projects within Morocco.

German Ambassador Robert Dölger expressed his satisfaction with the agreement, underscoring its significance in bolstering the reconstruction efforts.

“I believe this contribution from Germany will truly make a difference for those affected by the earthquake,” he stated, while acknowledging the strong ties between the two countries.

Following the ceremony, both Lekjaa and Rohleder reiterated their commitment to strengthening the partnership and exploring avenues for expanded access to KfW’s financial resources.

This latest development builds upon a history of successful collaboration. In December 2023, Morocco secured €257 million in loans and grants from KfW, further solidifying the economic ties between the nations.

The robust partnership between Morocco and Germany extends beyond financial assistance.

During German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser’s visit in October 2023, discussions focused on intensifying cooperation across various sectors, including security, combating organized crime, and tackling pressing regional challenges.

Additionally, the establishment of the joint Strategic Multidimensional Dialogue in July 2023 serves as a cornerstone for fostering a dynamic and multifaceted collaboration between the two nations.
