Rabat – The Women’s Wing of the Justice and Development Party (PJD) has publicly denounced Moroccan Minister of Justice Abdellatif Ouahbi’s recent proposal to ban the requirement for couples to present marriage contracts for hotel stays.
In a strongly worded statement, the organization criticized the move as “irresponsible” and potentially damaging to the moral and social fabric of Moroccan society. Led by women, the organization operates according to the vision of the PJD.
The organization called on all Moroccans inside and outside the country to “rally around the common national principles and confront anyone who attempts to tamper with the community security of Moroccans.”
Speaking at a parliamentary session in May, Ouahbi criticized hotels in Morocco for demanding marriage contracts from guests, stating that there are no legal grounds for such requests and suggesting that it violates privacy rights.
“Isn’t this a violation of their privacy? What is the legal basis for this request?” Ouahbi said. “If the law does not explicitly require it, then demanding it is illegal,” he added
He emphasized the importance of individual freedoms and denounced actions that go against them.
In addition, he criticized hotels that refuse women accommodation for having IDs with the same city address as the hotel, noting that this practice has no legal basis.
Following the minister’s statement, security services have reportedly issued verbal directives to hotels to end the requirement for presenting marriage contracts.
This has caused widespread controversy and mixed reactions among Moroccans, with some celebrating it as modern progress and others expressing concerns about its impact on societal norms and Islamic values.
Despite the reported directives from authorities, many hoteliers expressed concerns about potential legal consequences and the need to protect themselves amid a lack of official legislation or legal decree regarding the marriage contract ban.
Minister Ouahbi has been an outspoken advocate for personal freedom and liberal reforms, including the decriminalization of extramarital consensual relations, which has sparked controversy and debate in Moroccan society.
