Rabat – The number of Moroccan pilgrims who died during Hajj 2024 season reached 20 to date, according to Morocco’s Ministry of Islamic Affairs.
A statement from the ministry today said that the deaths occurred among pilgrims who traveled with travel agencies as well as under the ministry’s hajj campaign.
Reassuring Moroccan citizens concerned about the situation, the ministry said the number of deaths among Moroccan pilgrims is nearly the same number compared to the same period of last year’s Hajj.
The ministry explained that the deaths were due to natural causes, noting that 15% of Moroccan pilgrims this year are over 80 years old.
The statement further stressed that over the past 20 years, the number of deaths among Moroccan pilgrims has ranged annually between 30 and 45 cases.
Several reports expressed concerns about the increasing deaths among pilgrims from across the globe this year.
The death toll from this year’s Hajj exceeded 1,000 reports said. More than half of the people who died were unregistered pilgrims.
The hajj rituals also marked a scorching and extreme heat in Saudi Arabia.
Reports said that the number of deaths include over 658 Egyptians who died during Hajj.
About 630 of them were unregistered pilgrims.
