Marrakech – Morocco has made significant strides in the latest Henley Passport Index 2024 Global Ranking, securing the 68th position and solidifying its status as the top passport in the Maghreb region.
The Moroccan passport now grants its holders visa-free access to 72 destinations worldwide, a notable improvement from the previous year when it ranked 80th with access to only 65 destinations.
The Henley Passport Index, widely recognized as the most authoritative ranking of global passports, assesses the travel freedom of 199 passports across 227 destinations.
Among other Maghreb nations, Tunisia (71st) trails behind Morocco, while Mauritania (83rd), Algeria (84th), and Libya (98th) find themselves further down the list.
The index also reveals the countries with the strongest and weakest passports globally.
Singapore emerges as the world’s most powerful passport, offering visa-free access to an astounding 195 destinations. Conversely, Afghanistan sits at the bottom of the rankings, with its passport holders able to visit a mere 26 destinations without a prior visa.
In the Arab world, the United Arab Emirates leads the way, claiming the 8th spot alongside Lithuania, with visa-free access to 185 destinations.
Notably, Morocco’s passport power has been bolstered by recent visa exemption agreements with various countries.
In May 2024, Morocco and Azerbaijan signed a visa exemption agreement during the 15th Summit of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) in Banjul, Gambia. This agreement allows citizens of both countries with valid ordinary passports to travel freely between Morocco and Azerbaijan for tourism purposes.
Furthermore, the Thai Embassy in Rabat has confirmed that Moroccan tourists will soon enjoy visa-free entry to Thailand for stays of up to 60 days. This development is part of Thailand’s initiative to expand its visa-free entry to 93 countries, aiming to attract more international visitors.
