Rabat – Morocco has emerged as a frontrunner in ICT development, according to the latest “Measuring Digital Development – ICT Development Index 2024” report released by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU).
Released in late June, the report evaluates 170 countries and territories across 10 key indicators of ICT development.
These include metrics such as internet usage, mobile broadband penetration, affordability of mobile data and voice services, and mobile phone ownership rates. Each country is assigned a score from 0 to 100 based on these indicators, reflecting their level of connectivity.
Libya seized the top spot in Africa with an impressive score of 88 points, catapulting from fifth place in just one year.
Following closely behind Libya, Morocco secured second place with a score of 86 points, while Seychelles ranked third with 84 points.
The report recorded that, in Morocco, 89% of individuals use the Internet, 87.4% of households have Internet access at home, and 96% of individuals own a mobile phone.
It also indicated a positive trend across the African continent, with the average ICT development score rising to 50 points—a notable increase of around 3 points from the previous year’s index.
However, stark disparities still reign among African countries. A notable example of this disparity can be seen in the contrast between Libya, which ranked highest, and Chad.
Libya scored 88 points, while Chad scored 21 points, placing it at the bottom of the list.
This disparity reflects the uneven distribution of ICT resources and infrastructure within the continent, posing challenges in achieving widespread connectivity and digital inclusion.
The 2024 edition of the ICT Development Index includes 170 economies, up from 169 in the 2023 edition.
To ensure rigorous comparability, average scores for regions, income groups, and the global total in the 2023 and 2024 editions have been computed using data from a subset of 165 economies common to both editions.
The IDI for the 165 economies in the common set stands at 75 for the IDI 2024, marking an increase from 72.9 in 2023, reflecting a growth of 3.3%.
In 2023, Morocco lead Africa in the IDI with a score of 85 according to the ITU’s report.
