Marrakech – Moroccan companies are rapidly expanding their presence in Spain, securing an increasing number of licenses to operate in the country.
This surge in Moroccan transport activity has caught the attention of both Moroccan and Spanish media outlets, with some suggesting that Moroccan firms are on track to dominate the Spanish market.
The growth of Moroccan transport companies in Spain is highlighted by a stark contrast in the number of trips made by each country’s operators.
According to reports from Moroccan media, Spanish transport companies utilized just over 8,000 travel permits for trips to third countries last year, accounting for a mere 10 percent of the total.
In comparison, Moroccan transport companies made use of more than 80,000 licenses, demonstrating their strong foothold in the market.
This discrepancy has not gone unnoticed by industry stakeholders. The National Federation of Transport Associations of Spain has acknowledged that Moroccan authorities are actively negotiating with the Spanish Ministry of Transport to increase their quota of operating licenses.
The federation also noted that the Spanish fleet, despite consisting of more than 133,000 trucks, primarily focuses on European Union countries, leaving room for Moroccan companies to expand their operations.
The growing presence of Moroccan transport companies in Spain can be attributed, in part, to the increasing demand for Moroccan drivers.
Spanish media outlet La Razón has reported that Spanish companies are actively seeking out Moroccan drivers, offering attractive salary packages to fill the void left by a lack of young Spaniards interested in pursuing the profession.
