Marrakech – According to El Faro de Ceuta, Moroccan authorities have lost patience this summer with the typical scene of vast tourist beaches being colonized by private umbrella operators.
The war on umbrellas is back, but with an important ally for those frustrated by having to pay for a spot to relax because the space has been taken over by people doing business with these shaded areas.
Local sources consulted by El Faro de Ceuta report that the Moroccan Ministry of Interior has given clear instructions to local authorities to prevent the exploitation of these natural spaces by certain groups and to stop depriving citizens of enjoying the beaches.
Authorities in Tetouan and Rincon, located in the north of Morocco, have already begun impeding many attempts to occupy coastal areas.
Citizens have been complaining every summer about the occupation of beaches by umbrella operators, as they are prevented from setting up their own umbrellas in these places throughout the summer season.
Significant clashes are expected in the coming days between authorities and those who engage in this profession of occupying beaches during the summer.
This initiative is in addition to the one carried out at the beginning of May to liberate the public domain in these northern areas of the country in preparation for the summer season.
The goal is to eliminate informal phenomena, restore the aesthetics of city streets, impose organization, and put an end to disorder in the public domain. All of this is being done to “offer a new and elegant environment for visitors received during this time, as well as for residents.”
Furthermore, by carrying out these projects, “the commitment of local authorities to contribute to enhancing the city’s appeal as a tourist destination is reflected, in coordination with all relevant local institutions.”
Morocco seems determined to take action on this issue in response to the numerous complaints received from Moroccan citizens who struggle each year to find a place to plant their umbrella.
