Rabat – The anticipation is palpable as Morocco’s national Olympic team coach, Tarik Sektioui, prepares to unveil the squad for the upcoming football tournament at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Scheduled from July 26 to August 11, the tournament holds significant promise for the Moroccan team, known as Lionceaux de l’Atlas.
In an official announcement today, the Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) disclosed that Sektioui will hold a press conference on Thursday, July 4. It will take place at the Mohammed VI Football Complex in Sale, and start at 5 p.m. Moroccan local time.
The primary purpose of this press conference will be the highly anticipated revelation of the selected players who will represent Morocco at this global sporting event.
Leading candidates for this reinforcement include Achraf Hakimi, Nayef Aguerd, and either Yassine Bounou or Munir Mohamedi, pending final decisions influenced by club approvals.
Notably, players like Brahim Diaz from Real Madrid might miss out due to club commitments.
The draw for the Olympic Games placed the national Olympic team in Group B alongside Argentina, Ukraine, and Iraq.
At the 2024 Olympics, the Moroccan team will kick off their campaign against Argentina on July 24 at the Stade Geoffroy-Guichard in Saint-Etienne, followed by a match against Ukraine on July 27, and then facing Iraq on July 30.
In the 1972 Munich Olympics, Morocco advanced to the second round after finishing as runners-up in their group with 3 points.
They achieved this with a goalless draw against the United States, a decisive 6-0 victory over Malaysia, and a 0-3 loss to hosts West Germany. In the subsequent round, The Atlas Lions suffered defeats in all three matches against Denmark, Poland, and the Soviet Union.
This tournament marks the furthest advancement for the Atlas Lions in Olympic football to date.
As the nation gears up for another shot at Olympic glory, all eyes are now on Sektioui’s forthcoming announcement.
