Rabat – Spain and Germany, two of the most successful teams in European football championship history, are set today at 5 pm to clash in the quarter-finals of Euro 2024. The match will be broadcasted live on beIN Sport, with radio commentary on BBC 5 Live.
Both nations have won three Euro titles each, more than any other country, and have played more games at the European Championship than any other teams. This encounter marks only their fourth meeting in the finals.
Spain advanced to the quarter-finals after a dominant performance in Group B, where they did not concede a single goal. They continued their strong form by defeating Georgia 4-1 in the round of 16.
Germany, meanwhile, navigated challenging conditions to secure a 2-0 victory over Denmark, with goals from Kai Havertz and Jamal Musiala. The German team’s efficient performance reflected their ability to deliver under pressure.
This highly anticipated quarter-final match could easily have been a final, given the pedigree of both teams. However, due to the tournament’s draw, they meet at this earlier stage.
The winner will go on to face either Portugal or France in the semi-finals, adding to the high stakes of this encounter.
Spain and Germany’s first European Championship meeting was in 1984 in France. West Germany, the defending champions, were drawn in a group with Spain, Portugal, and Romania.
Spain’s late goal from Antonio Maceda secured a 1-0 victory, knocking the Germans out of the tournament. Four years later, in Germany, the teams met again. This time, the Germans emerged victorious with a 2-0 win.
Their most recent Euro meeting was in the 2008 final, held in Austria and Switzerland. Spain, having only one Euro title from 1964, faced Germany in a tightly contested match. Spain clinched their second Euro title with a 1-0 victory, marking a significant moment in their football history.
