Rabat – Morocco has welcomed the International Court of Justice (ICJ) advisory opinion that rejected Israel’s occupation of Palestinian territories.
An authorized source from Morocco’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed the news, emphasizing the importance of the opinion in supporting the legitimate rights of Palestinians to establish their independent and sovereign state with East Jerusalem as its capital.
The source also reiterated Morocco’s support for the two-state solution, adding that the North African country rejects all practices and measures seeking to alter the prevailing historical legal status on the ground.
The source continued that such acts undermine efforts to restore stability and calm in the region.
On Friday, the ICJ identified Israel’s presence in occupied Palestine as unlawful, stressing that the occupation forces are under an obligation to immediately cease all new settlement activities and evacuate all settlers from the occupied territories.
“All States are under an obligation not to recognize as legal the situation arising from the unlawful presence of the State of Israel in the Occupied Palestinian Territory and not to render aid or assistance in maintaining the situation created by the continued presence of the State of Israel in the Occupied Palestinian Territory,” the court added.
The opinion received praise from the international community, with many countries welcoming its ruling.
The court’s decision echoes Morocco’s frequent appeals, calling for Palestine’s independence.
In May, Morocco also welcomed the adoption of a resolution supporting the admission of Palestine as a full member of the United Nations.
“Through this resolution, of which the Kingdom of Morocco was the first co-sponsors, the General Assembly grants to the State of Palestine additional privileges and prerogatives within various organs of the United Nations,” the Moroccan permanent mission to the UN wrote.
The North African country has long supported the establishment of an independent Palestinian state based on the borders of June 4, 1967, with East Jerusalem as its capital.
Rabat also continues to reject the Israeli merciless campaign in Gaza, which has been ongoing since October 7, killing over 38,000 Palestinians. Including those still missing under the rubble, British journal The Lancet has predicted that the true death toll is closer to 186,000.
