Rabat – The National Coordination of Health Sector Unions has declared another nationwide strike from today until Friday, including a sit-in in front of the parliament in Rabat on Thursday.

The stoppage will impact all Moroccan healthcare institutions nationwide with the exception of emergency and extensive care services. The strike is a response to what the unions described as a “delayed response” from the government following consultations.

The escalation followed a meeting held last week with the Minister of Health Khaled Ait Taleb to inform the union about measures the government intends to implement regarding the health workers’ demands.

In a statement, the union noted their engagement with these proposals to implement the agreed points, covering legal and financial aspects. It said there has been a delay even though they have “sent a letter to the Head of the Government nearly a week after the responses were formulated by the coordination to expedite implementation.”

Faced with what they described as the government chief’s “incomprehensible silence,” the unions decided to carry on with their scheduled strike. They added that they hold Aziz Akhannouch “responsible for any negative consequences that may result from this strike, particularly concerning the impact on health services for citizens.”

On July 10, health professionals participated in a large scale protest during which they marched from Bab El Had in Rabat towards the parliament to express dissatisfaction with what they described as the government’s failure to honor a previously signed agreement.

However, protestors were met with severe force from security personnel who used water cannons to disperse the crowd. Videos of the incident have circulated on social media, sparking widespread outrage among Moroccans.

The national coordination criticized the use of force against demonstrators who protested in a “calm, peaceful, and civilized manner,” saying that it resulted in various injuries and arrests. In addition, the coordination demanded the full implementation of the signed agreement.
