Rabat – A 5.3 magnitude earthquake struck Portugal early morning today and was also felt across parts of Morocco.

The quake occurred at 5:11 a.m. (4:11 a.m. GMT), with an epicenter 58 kilometers west of Sines, on the high seas, and at a depth of 21 kilometers, as reported by the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere (IPMA).

The IPMA has since revised the earthquake’s magnitude to 5.3 on the Richter scale.

The U.S Geological Survey (USGS) detected the earthquake with a slightly higher magnitude of 5.4 and a depth of 17.5 kilometers.

The Spanish National Geographic Institute (IGN) reported that “the earthquake was felt in several places across Spain, particularly in Huelva in the south, and in Morocco.”

In Morocco, the earthquake’s impact was slightly felt but did not result in any major damages or injuries.

Local authorities have not reported any major incidents, structural damage or disruptions linked to the tremor.

Reports claim that Portuguese Civil Protection Commander Andre Fernandes confirmed that there were no reports of personal or material damage in Portugal.

As the situation continues to be assessed, the focus remains on monitoring the aftermath and ensuring the safety of residents in the affected regions.
