Bamako – A new survey has revealed that Morocco is leading the charge in Africa when it comes to the adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) tools like ChatGPT.
According to the 2023 CCI Global Consumer Sentiment Survey by The Boston Consulting Group (BCG), Morocco ranks among the top users of ChatGPT globally.
The survey reveals that a remarkable 80% of Moroccan consumers are aware of ChatGPT, with 38% actively using the AI-driven tool. This level of engagement positions Morocco as a leader not only in Africa but also on the global stage, highlighting the country’s commitment to embracing new technologies.
Morocco’s high adoption rate is part of a broader trend observed in countries with younger populations, where digital literacy is widespread, and technology is often seen as a means of advancing social and economic goals.
In Morocco, where the median age is relatively low, this tech-savvy population is increasingly integrating AI tools into their everyday lives, using them for tasks ranging from academic research to personal productivity and even as virtual assistants.
The BCG survey also highlights South Africa as another African nation with significant ChatGPT usage, with 31% of consumers actively engaging with the tool. South Africa’s score of 0.49 on the AI readiness index places it third in Africa, while Morocco, with a score of 0.42, ranks seventh.
These rankings, coupled with the high levels of AI awareness and usage in both countries, reflect a continent that is rapidly catching up with global trends in AI adoption.
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has also recognized Morocco’s potential in the AI sector, ranking it among the top ten African countries most prepared for AI integration.
This recognition is a testament to Morocco’s strategic investments in digital infrastructure and education, which are paving the way for greater AI adoption across various sectors, including finance, healthcare, and education.
Globally, the BCG survey presents a diverse picture of AI adoption, with countries like India leading the charge. In India, 45% of respondents reported using ChatGPT, the highest rate of adoption recorded in the survey.
This high usage rate is likely driven by India’s large IT sector, where AI tools like ChatGPT are increasingly being used to streamline processes and enhance productivity. Similarly, the Philippines and Brazil also show high levels of AI engagement, particularly among younger, tech-savvy populations.
In contrast, developed countries like the United States and Germany display lower rates of ChatGPT usage. In these regions, AI is more often explored out of interest or for entertainment purposes rather than as a necessity.
This difference in usage patterns highlights the varying levels of AI integration across different markets, with emerging economies like Morocco leading the way in practical, everyday applications of AI technology.
The motivations behind AI adoption are also evolving. Initially, many consumers engaged with ChatGPT and similar tools out of curiosity, eager to explore the capabilities of this new technology.
However, as AI becomes more integrated into daily life, its ability to meet unmet needs is becoming a key driver of adoption. In Morocco, for instance, consumers are increasingly using AI to achieve practical goals such as setting financial targets, obtaining personalized recommendations, or finding similar products to those they already own.
This shift from novelty to necessity is a clear indication of how deeply AI is becoming embedded in Moroccan society.
Yet, despite the optimism surrounding AI, the BCG survey also reveals a significant degree of ambivalence. Globally, 40% of respondents expressed excitement about AI’s potential, but 29% voiced concerns, particularly regarding data security and the ethical implications of widespread AI use.
In Morocco, these concerns are mirrored, especially with regard to the potential impact of AI on employment. As AI tools become more sophisticated, there is growing anxiety about the possibility of job displacement, particularly in sectors where automation could replace human labor.
Nevertheless, the benefits of AI remain compelling. In Morocco, as in other parts of the world, AI is seen as a powerful tool for enhancing workplace efficiency and improving educational outcomes.
The BCG survey found that 60% of global respondents believe AI will play a crucial role in education, a sentiment likely echoed in Morocco, where the education sector is increasingly leveraging AI to provide personalized learning experiences and improve access to quality education.
Moreover, the potential of AI to drive economic growth is significant. In Morocco, AI is already being used to optimize supply chains, enhance customer service, and improve decision-making processes in businesses.
As the technology continues to evolve, its applications are expected to expand further, offering new opportunities for innovation and growth in various sectors.
As the country continues to invest in digital infrastructure and education, it is well-positioned to capitalize on the opportunities presented by AI.
