Rabat- Israel has again attacked people in its northern neighbor Lebanon, killing ten Syrians, including a woman and her two children.
The violence between Israel and its neighbors continues to escalate, marked by another deadly airstrike in southern Lebanon and subsequent retaliatory attacks.
On Saturday, an Israeli airstrike targeted an alleged Hezbollah weapons depot near Nabatiyeh, resulting in the deaths of at least ten people, all of whom were Syrian nationals according to Lebanon’s Ministry of Health.
The victims included a woman and her two children, with five others injured, two critically.
Hezbollah, in response, launched a barrage of 55 rockets at the Israeli town of Ayelet HaShahar, igniting fires across the Upper Galilee region but causing no reported injuries.
The deadly strike on Nabatiyeh is one of the most severe incidents in Lebanon since the outbreak of hostilities on October 8.
Israel’s retaliatory strikes have led to a cycle of violence that the US and various international organizations have seen as threatening to spill over into a broader regional conflict.
This ongoing violence is compounded by recent assassinations of senior Hezbollah and Hamas figures, which have further inflamed tensions.
Last month, an Israeli strike in Beirut killed a top official of Hezbollah, followed shortly by the assassination in Tehran of Ismail Haniyeh, Hamas’ chief negotiator in ongoing cease-fire talks. Both Hezbollah and Iran have vowed retaliation, increasing fears of a wider war.
In Lebanon, Hezbollah has reported the deaths of 411 of its members, along with additional casualties among other militant groups and civilians. On the Israeli side, the conflict has claimed the lives of 26 civilians and 18 soldiers, with the northern border region becoming a flashpoint for daily exchanges of fire.
The international community has been closely monitoring the situation, with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken arriving in Israel on Saturday to push for a ceasefire.
The strike on Nabatiyeh and the subsequent rocket attacks underscore the fragility of the situation and the potential for a rapid escalation. As both sides brace for further conflict, the prospect of a broader regional war looms ever larger, with devastating consequences for civilians caught in the crossfire. The urgency of for a diplomatic resolution is more pressing than ever, yet the path to peace remains fraught with obstacles, as evidenced by the faltering ceasefire talks.
