Rabat – In a thrilling Olympic semi-final at the Orange Velodrome, Spain U23 emerged victorious with a 2-1 win over Morocco U23, ending the Atlas Lions’s remarkable journey in the 2024 Olympics and dashing their hopes of reaching the final.

Morocco’s bid to repeat their World Cup 2022 heroics against Spain fell short in this high-stakes clash.

From the opening whistle, Morocco displayed tactical discipline and attacking flair, dominating the game against their opponent.

Soufiane Rahimi’s standout moment came in the 36th minute when he deftly headed the penalty shot into the net to score Morocco’s first goal.

Rahimi, who has been in scintillating form throughout the tournament, now adds another goal to his impressive tally.

Spain’s Fermin Lopez delivered a crucial equalizer in the 66th minute with a well-placed shot, leveling their score with Morocco’s.

The match witnessed several fouls against Morocco’s Atlas Lions, who scored the first goal through a penalty in the first half.

In the 72nd minute of the match, Adrian Bernabe received a yellow card for a foul on Morocco’s Olympics 2024 top scorer, Rahimi.

A second goal for Spain netted by Juanlu Sanchez assisted by Lopez in the 85th minute put them in a commanding position making Morocco’s task even more difficult

Despite their best efforts, Morocco struggled to regain control, as Spain continued to apply pressure and exploit defensive gaps.

Coach Tarik Sektioui’s tactical adjustments and efforts to break down Spain’s defense were admirable, but the team faced an uphill battle against a well-organized Spanish side.

The absence of midfielder Bilal El Khanouss due to suspension was felt, as Morocco struggled to control the midfield and create clear-cut chances.

For Spain, the win represents a significant achievement, as they move on to the final. Spain’s coach Santi Denia’s strategic approach paid off, as they managed to neutralize Morocco’s threats and capitalize on their opportunities.

Though the defeat is a bitter end for Morocco, their journey through the tournament has been nothing short of extraordinary.

Following their loss, they will compete in the third-place play-off, a match that will determine who takes home the bronze medal, against the other semi-finalist – either Egypt or France – who did not progress to the final.

The team’s performances, including a dominant 4-0 win over the United States and formidable displays against Argentina and Iraq, have earned them praise and admiration worldwide. In addition, their formidable performance allowed them to win their first-ever knockout stage game in the Olympics and qualify for the semifinals.
