Rabat – A heatwave with temperatures up to 47 degrees Celsius is expected to hit several Moroccan provinces from Saturday to Monday.
A weather notice from the General Directorate of Meteorology said that temperatures between 42 and 44 degrees are expected over the weekend in the provinces of Ouezzane, Moulay Yacoub, Fez, Taza, Sefrou, Taounate, Sidi Kacem, Khenifra, Azilal, and Khouribga.
Al Haouz will experience the same temperatures, while a heatwave of 43 to 47 degrees will be recorded in the provinces of Fquih Ben Salah, Beni Mellal, Settat, Marrakech, Kelaa Seraghna, Rehamna, Zagooura, and Taroudant.
Tata, Guelmim, Ass-Zag, Bojdour, Es-Semara and Oued Ed-Dahab will experience the same temperatures during the same period.
Temperatures between 43 and 47 degrees will hit the provinces of Assa-Zag, Es-Semara, Boujdour, Aousserd, and Oued Eddahab on Monday.
Last month, a severe heatwave caused deaths among several hospitalized patients in the Beni Mellal province.
The news of the deaths raised concerns among Moroccans, with many condemning the lack of equipment to ensure patient safety at the hospital.
The Ministry of Health’s regional directorate in the province issued a statement last week, noting that the heatwave has significantly impacted vulnerable people.
In the statement, the regional directorate said that the regional hospital of Beni Mellal recorded 21 deaths, including four fatalities outside the hospital premises and 17 hospital deaths.
“The majority of the deceased suffered from chronic illnesses and were elderly, with a significant rise in temperatures contributing to their deteriorating health conditions and subsequent deaths.”
The directorate urged citizens in the region to exercise caution, and avoid exposure to sunlight, especially during peak hours.
