Rabat – Tarik Sektioui, the Moroccan football icon and current manager of the national under-23 team, is basking in the glow of recent success after leading his squad to secure a bronze medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

This achievement is further compounded by Morocco’s impressive 6-0 victory over Egypt, showcasing the team’s remarkable form under Sektioui’s leadership.

Sektioui’s football journey began in Fez, Morocco, and took him across Europe, where he made an impressive impact on the field.

A retired Moroccan footballer, Sektioui primarily played as a right winger. He spent most of his career in the Netherlands, where he played for eight seasons with Dutch clubs Willem II, AZ Alkmaar, and RKC.

Over his time there, he made 142 appearances and scored 29 goals in the Eredivisie. In Portugal, he achieved notable success by winning several titles with FC Porto.

His career kicked off at AJ Auxerre in France but truly flourished when he moved to Willem II in the Netherlands. His dynamic performances earned him the captaincy and set the stage for a successful tenure at AZ Alkmaar.

A brief stint in Portugal with C.S. Marítimo was followed by a more successful period at FC Porto. Despite an initially challenging adaptation period, Sektioui became a key player, contributing to Porto’s 2007-2008 Primeira Liga title and delivering a standout performance in the UEFA Champions League with a spectacular goal against Olympique de Marseille.

After further adventures in the UAE with Ajman Club and a final stint at Maghreb de Fes, Sektioui retired from professional play, only to return briefly to his first club before fully transitioning to coaching.

From player to manager

Sektioui’s managerial career began in 2013 with Maghreb de Fes, and his coaching trajectory quickly proved his adeptness at leadership.

His tenure at various Moroccan clubs, including leading RS Berkane to victory in the CAF Confederation Cup in 2020, showcased his ability to inspire and manage teams effectively.

His return to Morocco also saw him manage Union de Touarga and his former club, Maghreb de Fes, before taking the reins of the Moroccan under-23 team.

Sektioui’s positive role as the head coach of Morocco’s under-23 team reached a pinnacle yesterday when his squad clinched the bronze medal at the Paris Olympics 2024. This marks the first medal won by a Moroccan football squad in the Olympic Games.

This achievement not only highlights his successful transition from player to coach but also reflects his ability to cultivate young talent and lead them to international recognition.

The Moroccan team’s performance in the Olympics was a testament to Sektioui’s strategic accuracy and motivational skills. Under his guidance, the under-23 squad displayed a blend of tactical discipline and attacking flair, which was critical in securing the bronze medal.

Sektioui’s triumph at the Olympics stands as a formidable milestone in his career since it mirrors his evolution from a celebrated player to a respected coach and demonstrates his ongoing commitment to Moroccan football.

As he continues to lead and inspire, the football community will undoubtedly keep a keen eye on Sektioui’s future endeavors.

Post-match, Coach Sektioui expressed immense pride in the team’s historic achievements and confidence in their ability to maintain their impressive performance in the 2024 Olympics.

In an interview with the Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) official channel on Sunday, he praised the recent advancements in Moroccan football and credited King Mohammed VI’s vision and FRMF president Fouzi Lekjaa’s dedication to its growing international success.

Sektioui conveyed his honor at working with the team, noting their deep love for their country and their commitment to advancing Moroccan football.

In the third-place match against Egypt, Morocco’s Atlas Lions clinched the bronze medal by dominating possession and creating numerous scoring opportunities.

Soufiane Rahimi, the standout player of the tournament, set a record as the top scorer of the Paris 2024 Games with 8 goals.

The Atlas Lions have captured the hearts of Moroccans and intrigued the world with their exceptional performance throughout this year’s Olympic tournament. Their triumph is expected to inspire hope among future generations of Moroccan footballers.
