Rabat – Morocco secured the top spot at the 2024 African Mathematics Olympiads, which took place from August 10 to 20 at the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa.
Morocco’s Ministry of National Education announced that the Moroccan team achieved a record-breaking total of 201 points, setting the highest score ever recorded in the history of the Olympiads.
Gold medals were awarded to Yacine Kamouh from the Casablanca-Settat region, who scored a perfect 42 out of 42 points; Adam Mahdan from the Souss-Massa region with 35 out of 42 points; and Sami Moussaoui from the Oriental region, who achieved 33 out of 42 points.
Meanwhile, silver medals went to Sarah Al-Masnawi from Casablanca-Settat (31/42 points), Sakina Brransi from Rabat-Salé-Kenitra (30/42 points), and Lina Chaker from the same region (30/42 points).
The three female students also earned gold medals in the Pan African Mathematics Olympiads (PAMO) Girls category.
This year’s Olympiads saw participation from 27 countries, each represented by a team of six students (three girls and three boys).
The Algerian team secured second place with 186 points, while Tunisia came in third with 133 points.
The Ministry of National Education extended its heartfelt congratulations to the students who proudly represented Morocco, the mentors who prepared them for this continental event, and their families for their support and encouragement.
In July, six Moroccan high school students, ready to represent their country at the 2024 International Mathematics Olympiad (IMO) in England, were unable to attend due to delays in their visa applications.
This setback has ignited significant criticism among Moroccans, who have urged the government to take action to prevent similar issues in the future.
There have also been particular calls for accountability within the Ministry of Education, with many pointing fingers at Minister Benmoussa for failing to facilitate the student’s participation.
The incident has also reignited general discussions around visa hardships and discrimination when it comes to academic and professional opportunities.
