Rabat – Israel has launched a series of airstrikes across Lebanon since Monday, resulting in the tragic deaths of 558 people, including 50 children, marking the deadliest assault since the Israel-Hezbollah war of 2006.
The Lebanese Health Ministry has confirmed that at least 1,835 were wounded in the Israeli air raids, which mainly hit southern Lebanon and Beirut.
The United Nations reported that tens of thousands of Lebanese civilians are fleeing their homes in the wake of Israeli bombardment. Videos on social media showed chaotic scenes with highways in southern Lebanon jam-packed with people fleeing north to escape Israeli bombardment.
Israeli Occupation Forces (IOF) announced that they sent overnight strikes aimed at approximately 1,600 Hezbollah “targets.” Israeli “defense” officials described the situation as the “most difficult week for Hezbollah since its establishment.”
In response, Hezbollah has fired volleys of missiles into northern Israel, with reports indicating that over 200 projectiles crossed the border, causing panic in cities like Haifa. The group said earlier today that its volleys bombed the Kiryat Shmona settlement in northern Israel, but that the majority have been intercepted.
Hezbollah’s leadership vowed further retaliation for the brutal attacks, while Iran’s foreign minister Abbas Araghchi said that Tehran will “not remain indifferent” to Israel’s attacks in Lebanon and Gaza.
IOF spokesperson Avichay Adraee issued on Tuesday an “urgent” warning for Lebanese villages to move at least one kilometer away from buildings it claimed are used by Hezbollah.
This is an excuse the IOF have often used to justify their attacks on civilians and residential areas in Gaza and the West Bank, claiming that it gave civilians prior notice, and that it is targeting strongholds of Hamas, and now those of Hezbollah in Lebanon.
The deadly strikes on Lebanon have drawn international concern, with officials from the United Nations and the European Union warning of a potential regional war. targeting Hezbollah strongholds
This latest round of attacks follows nearly a year of cross-border skirmishes, which was intensified after the Israeli war on Gaza began. Tensions further intensified after Israel assassinated several Hezbollah and Hamas leaders, with the drop that spilled the glass being the explosions involving over 5,000 pages across Lebanon.
The blasts, which killed at least 37 people and injured thousands, were largely attributed to Israel, though the latter has not claimed responsibility for it. In response, Hezbollah leadership blamed the attack on Israel and vowed retaliation.
