Brazil Adopts Complete Map of Morocco During G20 Presidency

Doha – Brazil unveiled a world map featuring Morocco’s complete geography, including its southern provinces, as part of its annual G20 presidency. The map, created by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics, was presented to Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

The map highlights the 19 G20 member countries, plus the African Union and European Union. It also showcases nations hosting Brazilian diplomatic representations, reflecting Brazil’s extensive global presence, particularly in Africa.

According to the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics, the map’s release allows Brazil to position itself uniquely on the international stage during its G20 presidency, which runs from December 1, 2023 to November 30, 2024.

In June, during the Brazilian Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira’s official visit to Morocco, Brazil expressed its support for Morocco’s Autonomy Plan for the Western Sahara.

In a joint statement, Brazil praised Morocco’s “serious and credible efforts” to advance the resolution of the Western Sahara dispute through the 2007 Autonomy Initiative.

Brazil, which presided over the UN Security Council in October 2023 when resolution 2703 was adopted, reiterated its backing of UN efforts to achieve a mutually acceptable political solution, in line with relevant UN resolutions.

Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita further commended Brazil’s important roles in the G20, BRICS, and other international organizations.

He noted the long history of Morocco-Brazil relations dating back to the 19th century and shared visions on issues like the environment, migrants’ rights, and optimism about Africa’s future.

The two countries announced the resumption of direct flights between Casablanca and São Paulo starting December 2024, the appointment of a Brazilian military attaché in Rabat, and the signing of a security agreement.

As G20 president, Brazil has established priority issues including fighting hunger, poverty and inequality, promoting sustainable development, and reforming global governance.

Over 100 G20 meetings will be held across Brazil, culminating in the G20 Leaders’ Summit on November 18-19 in Rio de Janeiro.

The G20, founded in 1999, represents around 85% of global GDP, over 75% of world trade, and about two-thirds of the world’s population.
