Morocco Renews Call for Immediate, Lasting Ceasefire Against Israeli Genocide

Rabat – Morocco has renewed concerns about the situation in Gaza, renewing its call for an immediate and lasting ceasefire against the ongoing genocide launched by the Israeli Occupation Forces (IOF) since October 2023.

The North African country reiterated Morocco’s position during the 57th regular session of the UN Human Rights Council (HRC), which is taking place in Geneva under Morocco’s presidency.

“The Kingdom of Morocco renews its call for an immediate and lasting ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, unconditional access to humanitarian aid, and the protection of civilians, to pave the way for lasting peace, based on a two-state solution,” Morocco’s Permanent Representative to Geneva Abdellah Boutadghart said on Tuesday.

Morocco’s delegation emphasized the country’s stance on Gaza during a general debate on the human rights annual report, led by the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Turk.

In the report, Turk renewed concerns about the global human rights situation, in which vulnerable populations around the world continue to be plagued by aggressions and relentless violent campaigns.

Drawing attention to what is happening in Gaza, Turk warned that the situation could have consequences in many countries, with Morocco’s delegation sharing the same concerns.

Gaza has been devastated by Israeli genocide, which has so far killed over 41,000 people and left more than 94,925 others injured.

For the part of Morocco’s delegation, in addition to Gaza, they also expressed concerns about the situation of migrants’ rights, the rise of systematic racism and xenophobia, as well as climate change and its impact on food and health security among other challenges.

“More than ever, we need to address the structural and immediate causes of these societal ills and prevent their impact on the enjoyment of human rights, by focusing on comprehensive and concrete measures that can ensure us a more sustainable future,” Boutadghart said.

The debates that are part of the 57th regular session will be ongoing until October 11 under the presidency of Ambassador Omar Zinber, Morocco’s Permanent Representative to the UN Office in Geneva and the HRC’s president for this year.

The council will examine over 80 human rights reports, presented and analyzed by global experts.
