Rabat – Authorities detained in Tetouan six individuals, including a minor, between the ages of 16 to 31, on charges of spreading misleading information and digital content that promotes irregular immigration.
The arrests, carried out yesterday afternoon by the Prefectural Judicial Police of Tétouan in coordination with the General Directorate of Territorial Surveillance (DGST), are part of a broader crackdown by both the DGST and the General Directorate of National Security (DGSN) aimed at dismantling networks involved in irregular immigration and human trafficking.
A security source disclosed that the cybersecurity division of the DGSN had identified online posts and digital content suggesting an intent to breach the security fence between Fnideq and Ceuta.
These posts reportedly influenced users on social media platforms to engage in irregular migration.
Thorough investigations and on-the-ground inquiries resulted in the identification and arrest of the suspects across multiple locations, including Tetouan, Casablanca, Souk Larbaa, Ksar El Kebir, and Tangier.
The arrested individuals are currently undergoing a judicial investigation overseen by the relevant prosecutor’s office to determine the underlying motives behind their criminal activities.
Earlier in August, a significant security alert was triggered at the border between Fnideq and Ceuta due to minors attempting to breach the border.
Reports suggest that these youths exploited the thick fog and heavy visitor traffic to evade beach security forces, ultimately throwing themselves into the rough sea.
In a bid to address this troubling issue, Moroccan border control, in collaboration with law enforcement agencies, intercepted approximately 87,000 individuals attempting to migrate to Europe in 2023.
