Rabat – Morocco ranked 84th out of 139 countries in the recent 2024 Gender Equality Index, according to a recent statistical review by the Joint Research Centre (JRC) of the European Commission.

This places Morocco first in the Maghreb region, ahead of Tunisia (85th), Algeria (88th), and Mauritania (126th). Libya was not included in the rankings.

Morocco ranks fourth in the North Africa and Middle East (MENA) region. Meanwhile, the UAE leads the Arab world at 32nd globally, followed by Kuwait at 54th, and Saudi Arabia at 69th.

Switzerland, Sweden, Denmark, Norway, and Finland topped the global rankings, respectively. They were followed by Ireland, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, Austria, and Slovenia.

The SDG Gender Index (SDG-GI) tracks global progress on gender equality related to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the 2030 Agenda.

Launched in 2019 and updated in 2022, the 2024 version is its third iteration. It assesses 14 out of the 17 SDGs signed by 193 UN member states, focusing on those where gender aspects are most visible and measurable.

The JRC statistical audit aims to assess and suggest improvements for the SDG Gender Index (SDG-GI) by examining its data characteristics, structure, and methods.

It seeks to strengthen the index’s robustness and effectiveness as a monitoring tool for gender equality by streamlining indicators, adjusting inclusion thresholds, and enhancing documentation.

The report emphasized the importance of data in guiding efforts towards gender equality, noting that the transformation of this data into actionable metrics is crucial for overcoming slow progress since 2015.

The Index comprises 56 indicators across these 14 SDGs, with each goal linked to 3 to 5 indicators.

The 2024 version includes 139 countries, up from 135 in the previous version, with trend data from 2015, 2019, and 2022.
