Rabat – In a noteworthy development, Michel Barnier’s newly formed government features Othman Nasrou, a Franco-Moroccan, who has been appointed Secretary of State for Citizenship and the Fight Against Discrimination.
The New French government, unveiled on Saturday evening, includes two Franco-Moroccans: Rachida Dati, reappointed as Minister of Culture and Heritage, and Nasrou.
Several ministers from the previous Attal government, including Sebastien Lecornu, who continues as Minister of the Armed Forces and Veterans, will remain in the Barnier cabinet.
Nasrou represents a new generation of passionate and dedicated political leaders committed to promoting diversity and inclusion within France.
Born in Casablanca in 1987, Nasrou ventured into the political scene at an early age after graduating from Ecoles des Hautes Etudes Commerciales (HEC) Paris and working briefly in the corporate world.
As a member of the political party Les Républicains (LR), he was elected municipal councilor in Trappes, a Paris suburb, in 2014, where his movement, Trappes Citoyens, established itself as the primary opposition force in local elections.
In 2015, Nasrou was elected as a regional councilor and quickly advanced to Vice-President of the Île-de-France region, where he managed tourism and international affairs.
By 2017, he was leading the majority group in the regional council, and two years later, he took on the role of Vice-President of Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines, focusing on economic development.
In 2020, he returned to the Île-de-France region as vice president for European and international affairs.
The following year, he expanded his responsibilities to include youth, career guidance, higher education, and research, while also serving as the first Deputy Secretary General of the Republicans (LR), leading the campaign for the party’s presidency in 2022.
In the July elections, a left-wing coalition known as the New Popular Front (NFP) secured the highest number of parliamentary seats, but fell short of achieving an overall majority.
