Rabat – The Spanish National Police, in collaboration with Morocco’s Directorate General for Territorial Surveillance (DGST), arrested two individuals in northern Spain suspected of being linked to the terrorist organization Daesh.
The arrests took place on Friday in the towns of Itsasondo, located in the Guipúzcoa region, and Avilés, in Asturias, as part of a counter-terrorism operation.
The suspects are accused of indoctrination, disseminating terrorist propaganda, and inciting violence, according to a statement from the Spanish police.
The investigation revealed that both individuals had been under surveillance since early this year due to their activities on social media, where they allegedly shared pro-Daesh messages and encouraged violent acts.
The operation was conducted under the oversight of Spain’s Central Investigation Court, in coordination with the Public Prosecutor’s Office of the National Court.
The Spanish police emphasized the crucial role of the DGST in this international effort, noting that numerous terrorists have been captured thanks to similar collaborations in recent years.
It also reiterated that the fight against terrorism is a strategic priority, both domestically and through global partnerships.
Just last month, on September 20, Spanish Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska praised the security cooperation between Spain and Morocco, calling it “exceptional and extraordinary.”
He emphasized the trust and shared commitment between the two nations, particularly in combating organized crime, during the inauguration of a new canine unit in Valladolid.
“Global challenges require cooperation, loyalty, and professionalism,” Grande-Marlaska said, underlying the importance of the Spanish-Moroccan alliance in maintaining public safety.
