Rabat – Police arrested a 45-year old male suspect in Tangier in possession of over seven kilograms of cocaine on Thursday.
A statement from the police said the arrest was in collaboration with Morocco’s General Directorate of Territorial Surveillance (DGST).
The suspect, with a criminal record and wanted at the national level, was arrested based on several warrants issued by police in Tetouan, Tangier and M’diq, in northern Morocco.
He was initially caught red handed with 100 grams of cocaine in his possession.
Search operation at the suspect’s house enabled police to seize an additional 7.7 kilograms of cocaine intended for drug trafficking.
Police also seized electronic equipment and other material used for packaging and preparing the drugs for trafficking.
Police put the suspect in custody for further investigation to uncover all criminal acts attributed to him and also to arrest other potential accomplices.
The operation is part of Morocco’s larger efforts to combat drug trafficking.
One of the latest crackdown on drugs took place on October 1, when a joint operation between security services and customs enabled police to foil an attempt to smuggle into Morocco a shipment of 37.635 kilograms of cocaine.
