Rabat – In a recent meeting, Morocco’s government coalition strongly condemned the genocide waged by Israel against the Palestinian people, asserting that lasting peace, security, and stability in the region can only be achieved through a two-state solution.
They also expressed deep concern over the Israeli aggression against Lebanon, reaffirming their commitment to support the rights of the Palestinian people and advocating for regional justice and stability.
The meeting was chaired by Aziz Akhannouch, Secretary General of the National Rally of Independents (RNI) party, and included Fatima Zahra Mansouri, coordinator of the collective leadership of the Authenticity and Modernity Party (PAM), and Nizar Baraka, Secretary-General of the Istiqlal Party (PI).
Solidarity with Palestine and Lebanon
The council’s joint statement reflects Morocco’s ongoing support for the rights and legitimacy of the Palestinian people to have an independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital.
Since October 7, 2023, Morocco’s government and citizens have been renewing their support for Palestine and condemning the Israeli genocide in Gaza targeting civilians.
Cities across the country, including the capital Rabat, have hosted several protests, in which Moroccans called on the government to end its diplomatic ties with Israel.
The latest protest took place this past week on Sunday, in which thousands marched from Rabat’s Bab El Had to the Moroccan parliament in commemoration of October 7 when Israel’s genocide on Gaza began. Demonstrators waved Palestinian and Lebanese flags, chanting slogans condemning Israeli war crimes committed on civilians through US support, and called upon the government to sever ties with Israel.
Inflation
In addition to solidarity with Lebanon and Palestine, the council also discussed other domestic affairs, issues related to inflation.
The council blamed external factors for the ongoing inflammation, noting that the cabinet has addressed this situation through “practical measures.”
The coalition cited several measures to alleviate the challenges these factors present to Moroccans. These include direct financial support to families, interventions to support certain goods and services – such as transportation – as well as efforts to stabilize the prices of some commodities like water and electricity.
The majority statement also noted that they advocate for the “continuation of the government to work to improve social and economic conditions, enhance incomes and focus on the situation of the middle class, while continuing efforts to achieve regional equity and uplift vulnerable and impoverished areas.”
They also pledged efforts to boost employability, noting that they are putting this matter at the top of their priorities in the upcoming phase.
The government also pledged ongoing efforts to address challenges, including natural disasters like floods and Al Haouz earthquake that killed over 3,000 and left 5,000 others injured last year in September.
ECJ ruling
Morocco’s majority council also renewed Morocco’s position against the recent hostile verdict issued by the European Justice Court (ECJ), which accused the European Commission of violating the “right to self determination” for the “people of Western Sahara.”
The verdict stands against the strategic EU-Morocco partnership related to fisheries and agriculture.
In response, the council said it rejects the ECJ ruling, noting that the verdict lacks foresight, neutrality, and legal understanding.
The council also reiterated that the territorial integrity dossier falls under the exclusive jurisdiction of the UN Security Council, noting that Morocco’s sovereignty over its southern provinces does not accept any extortion or compromise.
The government statement added that the council “expressed support for the Moroccan state’s firm position of not adhering to any agreement or legal document that does not respect its territorial integrity and national unity.”
