Rabat – The Biden administration has issued a stark warning to the Israeli government regarding the dire humanitarian situation in Gaza, demanding increased access to humanitarian aid or risk potential repercussions on US arms transfers.
A leaked letter that President Biden sent to Prime Minister Netanyahu reveals that Israel has 30 days to comply with these requests, which include allowing 350 aid trucks into the region, a move that echoes the escalating global concerns over the catastrophic living conditions faced by Palestinians.
However, for many Americans who are staunchly against the Biden administration’s active role in supporting Israel’s genocide this warning seems too little too late. Observers also bring up the precarious 30-day deadline as conveniently coming up after the November 4 presidential election, in which Biden’s vice president, Kamala Harris, is the Democratic nominee.
As the Israeli Occupation Forces (IOF) ongoing genocide continues to escalate, the humanitarian crisis in Gaza has reached critical levels. A year of bombardments and displacement have left many Palestinians struggling to survive, with food and medical supplies severely restricted.
Reports indicate that Israeli authorities are effectively weaponizing famine, resulting in what many are calling a war crime.
The International Court of Justice has issued legally binding orders for Israel to permit the delivery of essential services and humanitarian aid to the region, orders that have largely gone unheeded.
According to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, approximately 1.4 million people, or 70% of Gaza’s population, did not receive their monthly food rations in September.
As winter approaches, aid deliveries have plummeted to their lowest levels in months, exacerbating an already dire situation.
Compounding these challenges, Israeli parliamentarians are reportedly pushing legislation aimed at dismantling the operations of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency, which provides crucial support to Palestinian refugees.
The Euro-Mediterranean Observatory for Human Rights has raised the alarm, indicating that more than 400,000 Palestinians are on the verge of starvation and dehydration.
The organization points out that around 200,000 individuals in northern Gaza have been trapped for days without access to food or water.
Recent reports detail harrowing incidents where civilians, including families in desperate search of food, have faced deadly attacks.
In a tragic event on Monday, Palestinians attempting to reach a UN food distribution center were targeted by IOF fire, resulting in the killing of ten people and injuries to at least forty others.
