Rabat – Morocco’s Ministry of Higher Education, Scientific Research, and Innovation is set to increase the acceptance rate for university scholarships, raising it from 82% to 86% this year.
Minister Azzedine El Midaoui made the announcement Monday in the House of Representatives, explaining that this increase is part of a broader initiative to expand access to higher education for deserving students across the country.
Addressing a parliamentary question on the topic, El Midaoui highlighted that the ministry is actively seeking new funding sources to support a growing number of scholarship applicants.
Efforts to diversify funding are being conducted in partnership with stakeholders in the educational and financial sectors to ensure a steady stream of resources for student aid.
El Midaoui also responded to concerns regarding limited dormitory and cafeteria spaces on university campuses. Currently, Morocco’s university dormitories provide housing for approximately 60,000 students—a capacity that falls short of the growing demand.
Acknowledging this gap, the minister outlined plans to expand accommodation and dining facilities, noting that partnerships with regional governments and the private sector are key to increasing these capacities.
These improvements aim to enhance students’ academic experiences by addressing both financial and logistical challenges.
Scholarship quotas are set annually through a joint decree by the Ministries of Economy and Finance and Higher Education.
In accordance with Law 72.18, which aims to target social support programs effectively, the scholarship application process for undergraduates has undergone recent changes.
Instead of regional committees, a centralized ministerial committee now reviews applications, using data from the unified social register to improve transparency and efficiency.
