Rabat – As Morocco commemorated today the 49th anniversary of the Green March, King Mohammed VI delivered a speech highlighting the achievements and ongoing development of the southern provinces.
The Green March, a peaceful demonstration organized by the late King Hassan II to reclaim the Sahara from Spanish colonial rule, remains a powerful symbol of national unity and commitment to Moroccan sovereignty.
In his address, King Mohammed VI honored the legacy of the Green March and called on Moroccans to carry forward its spirit of resilience and dedication.
“The sacrifices of the Green March generation call for greater mobilization and vigilance,” he said, emphasizing the need to consolidate Morocco’s progress in affirming the identity of the Sahara.
This commitment, he noted, is essential not only for the southern provinces but also for the continued growth of the entire nation.
The king stressed that Morocco’s development agenda must benefit all citizens, regardless of location.
“We must ensure that the fruits of progress and development benefit citizens in all regions of the country, from the Rif to the Sahara, from the Oriental to the Ocean,” he said, underlining the goal of inclusive growth.
This message of unity is central to King Mohammed VI’s vision for the country—a vision that seeks to bridge regional disparities and provide equitable opportunities to all Moroccans.
Much of this commitment is exemplified by the New Development Model for the Southern Provinces (NMDPS), launched in 2015 to transform the Sahara region with a budget of 81 billion dirhams.
King Mohammed VI lauder the progress made through this initiative, which focuses on infrastructure, renewable energy, and social development. Key projects include the 1,000-kilometer Tiznit-Dakhla expressway and a major new port in Dakhla, which aim to connect and strengthen the regional economy.
As Morocco moves forward, King Mohammed VI highlighted the importance of sustainable growth and ongoing collaboration between local and national efforts.
“Our duty is to keep moving forward with resilience, ensuring the lasting benefits of progress,” he stated, reiterating his pledge to provide resources that empower Morocco’s southern provinces and enhance quality of life for all Moroccans.
