Rabat – Tanger Med Port security officers successfully intercepted a major international drug trafficking operation on Saturday morning.
Authorities seized 155,703 ecstasy pills hidden in a truck arriving from a European country, according to a press release from the General Directorate of National Security (DGSN).
According to initial investigations, the illicit cargo was discovered during routine border inspections. Police canine units were able to identify the narcotics, which were meticulously concealed in specially designed compartments within the truck’s cabin.
Two Moroccan nationals, aged 41 and 44, were apprehended at the scene, identified as the truck’s driver and his companion.
The suspects are currently in custody under judicial supervision as authorities, operating under the competent public prosecutor’s office, conduct further investigations.
The ongoing investigation aims to uncover additional suspects involved in this smuggling operation and to map out the broader network’s domestic and international connections.
The statement said that the drug bust is part of DGSN’s ongoing and intensified efforts to combat international drug and psychotropic substance trafficking.
Last month, Morocco’s National Security and Customs authorities intercepted a large shipment of illegal ecstasy tablets at Tanger Med Port. The operation thwarted an attempt to smuggle 209,000 ecstasy pills hidden inside a foreign-registered vehicle arriving from Belgium.
The drugs were concealed in cat food containers. Authorities arrested the vehicle’s driver, a Belgian-Moroccan national and put him in police custody.
