Rabat – Abdellatif Hammouchi, General Directorate of National Security and Territorial Surveillance (DGSN-DGST) met today with Francisca Bostyn, Director General of Belgium’s State Security, to discuss ways to boost counterterrorism cooperation.
A statement from DGSN said that the Belgium security chief is leading a significant security delegation during her visit to Morocco, which aims to discuss various issues of mutual concern for the two countries.
During the meeting, Bostyn recalled Morocco’s contribution and efforts in the fight against terrorism and extremism, expressing her country’s desire to strengthen and develop this cooperation to neutralize the risks threatening the security of both countries.
Hammouchi and Bostyn also discussed the importance of expanding the scope and areas of bilateral cooperation between both countries’ security agencies to facilitate the exchange of intelligence asn sharing expertise in the security field.
This was one of a series of several bilateral meetings that Hammouchi has engaged in with his counterparts in the international community to strengthen cooperation on internal security issues and emerging threats.
Hammouchi has been calling to attention Morocco’s role in contributing to regional peace and security during his participation at local and international high level security symposiums.
In September, Hammouchi participated in the 8th Interpol meeting for the MENA region’s Heads of Security and Police.
The meeting provided an opportunity for Morocco’s national security services to share the country’s expertise in addressing emerging crimes at the regional level.
The gathering also served as a platform to discuss the new security challenges in the area, including combating organized crime, illicit financial flow, online recruitment, and rapid radicalization, as well as the risks of drone-based terrorist attacks.
Morocco’s role in countering terrorism has been recognized in several reports and by several prestigious organizations, including NATO and Interpol.
In May, Interpol reported on Morocco’s wide counterterrorism efforts, noting that the country participates in 20 significant security operations worldwide. The country’s prestige in this realm earned them a position as Vice President of the Interpol for Africa.
This nomination exemplifies the agency’s trust in Morocco to maintain security and stability at the regional and international levels, as well as continue to lead in promoting South-South security cooperation.
In October, NATO’s Secretary General’s Special Representative for the Southern Neighborhood, Javier Colomina, described Morocco as an “indispensable player” in the security cooperation.
