Morocco’s Royal Armed Forces has conveyed to the UN’s Sahara peacekeeping mission MINURSO its concerns about the recent terrorist attacks by the separatist Polisario Front in the southern Moroccan city of Mahbes.
General Mohammed Berrid, Inspector General of the royal army held talks on Tuesday in Agadir with MD Fakhrul Ahsan, Commander of the MINURSO peacekeeping force, on the recent provocative acts by the separatist group.
The Polisario attacks targeted a ceremony celebrating the 49th anniversary of the Green March in Mahbes on November 9, stirring uproar and frustration about the separatist group’s ongoing hostilities and terror attacks targeting civilians.
FAR Maroc, a military forum active on Facebook, said today that the meeting served as an opportunity for both officials to reiterate their commitment to working together to secure peace and security in the region.
They commended the exceptional ties between the two parties and the efforts made in maintaining stability.
Polisario’s latest attack sparked condemnation, especially from the Sahrawi Non-Governmental organizations Alliance, which accused Algeria of exacerbating regional tensions and hindering efforts to achieve a lasting peaceful solution to the Western Sahara dispute.
The organization described the Polisario attack as a serious violation of the 1991 UN-brokered, adding that this is a “dangerous escalation in the region aimed at sparking tension and the resumption of hostilities in the border area of Mahbes despite the ceasefire.”
It also expressed deep concerns over Algeria’s stance, recalling the Algerian regime’s reluctance to shoulder its responsibility despite decades of direct and deep involvement in Polisario’s war on Moroccan territorial integrity.
“Its position has had a negative impact on the development of Polisario’s position,” the statement said, adding that this “resistance” is seen as an attempt to achieve territorial gains.
This is not the first attack by the Polisario Front. Last year in October, the separatist group also launched a terror attack in Es-Semara in southern Morocco, killing one and injuring three others.
Last month, Morocco’s ambassador to the UN Omar Hilale described Polisario as a terrorist militia that targets Morocco’s security.
“Every single day for half a century you [Algeria] have allowed them to cross the borders to attack us,” Hilale said.
