Rabat — Morocco’s Road Safety Agency has released an appeal, urging road users to exert vigilance and precautions to ensure safety as the New Year is a time marked by heavy traffic and movement across the country.
The agency issued a statement today, recalling the weather alerts forecasting snowfall and locally strong thunderstorms that affect several regions until Wednesday.
It notably urged all road users to be vigilant, emphasizing the importance of increased caution due to the difficult weather conditions.
The agency stated that all travelers should wear their seat belts and to comply with all road regulations, calling on drivers particularly taxi drivers and public transport drivers to respect traffic signs.
The statement urged drivers to show tolerance toward other road users, advising them to perform mechanical maintenance and inspections of their vehicles before using the road.
The agency also called on drivers to rest adequately before driving to maintain focus, suggesting that they plan their travel routes in advance.
Children under the age of 10 should also use back seats while seat belts should be used by all passengers, including those in the rear seats and those in the fronts.
Morocco deployed intensified security during the last day of the year, which is typically marred by incidents like vandalism, intoxication cases, and several arrests.
To tackle the situation, police dispatched units across the country, especially where celebrations are common – in Rabat, Marrakech, and Tangier, among others.
Between November 25 and December 1, Moroccan police recorded 2,155 road accidents. In total across these incidents, 16 people were killed and 2,914 others were injured, 129 of them in serious condition.
