Rabat – Palestinian factions Hamas and Fatah are meeting in Cairo to discuss Egyptian proposals on reopening the Rafah border crossing, a key gateway between Gaza and Egypt. Fatah, which governs parts of the occupied West Bank, has expressed urgency for ending the Israeli assault on Gaza, expediting humanitarian aid, and initiating reconstruction efforts.
Abdullah Abdullah, a Fatah official, confirmed the discussions to Anadolu news agency, stating, “A Fatah delegation is present in Cairo discussing with a Hamas delegation Egyptian proposals related to reopening the Rafah border crossing and having the Palestinian Authority manage it on the Palestinian side.”
The Rafah crossing has remained closed on the Egyptian side since May when Israeli forces occupied the Palestinian part. Abdullah did not elaborate on the nature of the Egyptian proposals.
Rafah, a city in southern Gaza spanning approximately 65 square kilometers, has been a critical lifeline for aid entering the besieged enclave. Following Israel’s invasion of Rafah on May 6, the city has been devastated, with many areas reduced to rubble. What was once considered a refuge for Palestinians fleeing bombardments is now a desolate ghost town.
Israel claims the invasion was necessary due to the alleged presence of Hamas fighters in the area, though it – again — has not provided evidence to substantiate these claims.
Israeli bombardments across Gaza persist. In the north, Israeli Occupation Forces (IOF) targeted buildings in the Jabalia refugee camp and launched artillery attacks on Beit Lahiya. Southern Gaza also saw intense shelling in Abasan al-Kabira near Khan Younis, while central areas like Nuseirat refugee camp and northern towns faced renewed airstrikes.
Meanwhile, the recent ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah, which had briefly sparked celebrations in Lebanon and saw families return to their homes, has already been violated by the IOF.
Lebanese authorities said that Israeli strikes killed at least two people on Monday.
Lebanon’s National News Agency reported that the IOF opened fire on houses in Naqoura using machine guns. France has accused Israel of breaching the ceasefire 52 times.
