Rabat – Morocco’s women’s national football team has retained its place among Africa’s top three teams, ranking 61st globally in the latest FIFA rankings published on Friday.
The Atlas Lionesses, who were 59th in the previous rankings released on August 16, continue to rank third on the continent. They trail Nigeria, which remains Africa’s best team at 36th globally, and South Africa, now 53rd after dropping three spots.
The latest ranking reflects Morocco’s steady rise in African football, following a remarkable year that included their historic debut at the FIFA Women’s World Cup in 2023.
The Lionesses became the first Arab team to qualify for the tournament’s knockout stages, making it to the Round of 16 before being eliminated.
On the global stage, the United States closed the year as the top-ranked team, maintaining their dominance despite challenges. Spain, the reigning world champions, climbed to second place, overtaking England, which slipped to fourth.
Germany returned to the top three, securing the third spot.
The Morocco women’s national football team, overseen by the Royal Moroccan Football Federation, made its international debut in 1998 during the third Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.
In October 2023, Spanish coach Jorge Vilda was appointed as the team’s new head coach. A month later, in November, Morocco was shortlisted by CAF for the 2023 Best African Women’s National Team of the Year award.
FIFA noted that the next women’s world rankings will be announced on March 6, 2025.
