Rabat – To diversify its tourism draws from not just the popular destinations like Fez, Marrakech, and Casablanca, as well as showcase the country’s full culture, the Moroccan government has introduced a pioneering initiative.

Morocco’s Ministry of Tourism announced a plan to transform 16 rural villages into thriving tourist destinations.

With a budget of MAD 188 million ($18.5 million), the project seeks to enhance local economies, create long-term employment opportunities, and elevate rural tourism.

Developed in partnership with the Moroccan Society of Tourism Engineering (SMIT), the program falls under the 2023-2026 tourism roadmap. The government asserts that it prioritizes sustainable practices while improving infrastructure and building new facilities to meet the expectations of modern travelers.

Each village will gain tailored accommodations, cultural hubs, and recreational spaces designed to draw both local and international visitors.

To ensure success, SMIT says will supervise implementation while maintaining alignment with Morocco’s sustainable tourism goals.

The project divides the villages into four geographical clusters while spotlighting the unique characteristics of each region:

First Cluster: Fez-Meknes and Casablanca-Settat

–Dar El Hamra captivates visitors with its traditional homes and agricultural charm as well as offers an authentic glimpse into local craftsmanship and ancient traditions

–Ain Leuh, surrounded by cedar forests near Azrou and Ifrane, serves as a gateway for nature trails and outdoor activities. It is also known for atmospheric cultural festivals

–Zaouiat Oued Ifrane, a serene mountain retreat, attracts nature enthusiasts with its waterfalls and trekking paths

–Ain Tizgha, celebrated for its scenic beauty and traditional farming practices, provides visitors with an opportunity to savor rich and authentic local cuisine

Second Cluster: Souss-Massa and Draa-Tafilalet

–Imi Ouaddar offers pristine beaches and crystal-clear waters, making it a haven for beachgoers and surfers

–Imssouane, a favorite among surfers, blends stunning marine landscapes with a unique culinary scene, particularly its fresh seafood

–Ksar Ait Benhaddou, a UNESCO World Heritage site, stands as an architectural marvel and cultural landmark

–Ksar Tizgui, a fortified village, boasts panoramic views of surrounding oases, providing an ideal setting to explore local history

Third Cluster: Marrakech-Safi and Beni Mellal-Khenifra

–Imlil, the starting point for treks to Mount Toubkal, combines breathtaking mountain views with warm hospitality

–Oukaimeden, Morocco’s premier ski resort in the Atlas Mountains, attracts winter sports enthusiasts and nature lovers

–Ouzoud, renowned for its spectacular waterfalls, offers a unique experience of Amazigh culture

–Zaouit Ahensal, a remote mountain village, captivates adventurers with its dramatic landscapes and trekking opportunities

Fourth Cluster: Tanger-Tetouan-Al Hoceima, Oriental, and Rabat-Sale-Kenitra

–Icherriten, located in the Rif Mountains, invites visitors to unwind while taking in panoramic views and experiencing authentic village life

–Jajouka, famed for its ancient musical traditions, provides a cultural immersion for those seeking heritage-rich experiences

–Tafoughalt, nestled in the Beni Snassen mountains, draws geology enthusiasts and hikers with its preserved natural beauty and historic caves

–Oulmes, renowned for its thermal springs, combines wellness offerings with local artisanal traditions

A broader vision for rural tourism

To elevate these villages as distinct destinations, the ministry will implement targeted marketing campaigns and collaborate with tourism operators.

Beyond infrastructure, the program envisions new cultural festivals, culinary trails, and platforms to promote local crafts and regional products.

These efforts reflect a broader strategy to diversify Morocco’s tourism sector while empowering rural communities and preserving their unique heritage.
