Rabat – In the wake of rising cases of measles in Morocco, the education ministry has reassured the public that the situation in Moroccan schools is stable and does not pose a serious concern.
Imane Elkohen, Head of the School Health Department at the Ministry of National Education addressed rumors alleging the closure of certain institutions and schools, saying that schools continue to operate normally.
Elkohen told SNRT News that the education ministry is working closely with the health ministry to address the current outbreak. Efforts include awareness campaigns, health monitoring, and ensuring vaccinations through a make-up campaign launched in October 2024.
She added that the two ministries are monitoring health conditions among students and staff, and refer any reported cases to health centers for proper care.
Elkohen affirmed that precautionary measures, implemented since the initial detection of cases, are still being followed. She added that any new decisions to curb the spread of measles would be based on updates from the epidemiological situation in consultation with the scientific committee for combating the disease.
While the education ministry continues to conduct awareness campaigns nationwide, it is giving particular attention to regions with measles outbreaks, such as Tangier, parts of Souss-Massa, and Marrakech, Elkohen concluded.
Morocco witnessed an alarming rise in measles cases in recent months, particularly among children. In addition, prisons across the country have recorded dozens of cases.
To address the situation, the health ministry announced opening up voluntary measles vaccination for adults, expanding its previous campaign which only targeted children under 18.
The ministry previously launched a national campaign to catch up on missed vaccinations for children under 18.
